About the Department

“Geography is the science of places and the relationships between people and their environments” - National Geographic Society

Geography is a unique blend of the basic and social sciences. It helps provide a wide range of information and understanding that is essential for making sense of a world.

The Department of Geography spread its petals from 2013-14 academic sessions with General course and elevated to Honours course in the year 2015. Currently, the Department is served by three faculty members along with one non-teaching Lab-Attendant. The Department is run through a fully equipped laboratory, with an ICT facility along with separate theory classrooms. From 2013-14, the Department initiated different co-curricular activities were initiated to encourage creativity and thrive among the students of the Department beyond prescribed curriculum through poster competitions, debates, quiz contests and so on. Seminars and colloquiums are arranged by the Department to enrich the knowledge of the students. The Department had started organizing extension or special lectures in 2022, by renowned geographers who have delivered their thought-provoking lectures on special topics. Various methods of teaching are implemented, ranging from the traditional classroom teaching method to the use of the latest audio-visual modes of presentation because it helps to enrich the lecture methods. Regular and periodic evaluations of students’ are conducted to determine the student's understanding of the subject. Special classes are arranged for students who have difficulty in understanding concepts. There are well-equipped laboratories and a departmental library for the use of students and teachers. The students also prepare and display the annual Wall Magazine of the Department, namely “Pangea” to display their acumen. The orientation of the course has been arranged with an eye towards the development of Modern Geography as well as the changing state of the present world.

Extra-Curriculum Activities

Wall Magazine:

The dept. has organised a wall magazine “Pangea” every year, starting from 2019, focused on geography can be an excellent extracurricular activity for students at Siddhinath Mahavidyalaya. The theme of the wall magazine could be broad, such as "Exploring Our World," or specific, like "Geographical Wonders of India."

Freshers and farewell:

Our dept. typically organized to welcome new students (freshers) and bid farewell to departing students (graduating seniors). It's an occasion to celebrate the beginning of a new academic year and acknowledge the achievements of outgoing students. Our dept also organised farewell party.

Educational excursion:

Our dept. organised field trips and educational excursions in several parts of the country. The aim of this field trip abroad could be an incredibly enriching experience, offering students the opportunity to explore different cultures, landscapes, and environments firsthand. Field visits in different parts of India (Sikkim-Gangtok, Kola Kham, Vizag, Kalim pong) have been organised regularly as per the Vidyasagar University syllabus to enhance their field-based knowledge.

Workshop and add-on course:

Our department has organised seminars, workshops and hands-on training for student to enhance their practical knowledge and skills. The faculty of the department is actively engaged and motivates students to participate in different kinds of workshops and training.
